Guide To Selecting Your Wheel

CBN, also known as Borazon, is used to grind hardened steels. Very tough, these wheels are normally run wet.. Primarily used in toolroom applications for grinding and sharpening cutting tools such as drills, router bits, planer knives, wood knives, etc.. Grit size determines metal removal rate and finish. Common grit sizes are 80 to 220. 80 would be coarse and 220 would be fine. Most applications would use a 120 grit wheel. The 'X' dimension is the CBN layer thickness. The thicker the thickness the longer the wheel life but the cost is increased as well. A good thickness for most applications would be 1/8". 1/4" would be for extremely heavy use and 1/8" would be for light use or for testing purposes.

The bond is what holds the grains together. The most common bond type is Resin although there are Vitrified and Metal bond CBN wheels available for special applications.

The concentration, in layman's terms, is the actual amount of CBN in the mix. Generally, a concentration of 75 or 100 is preferred and the price of the wheel will be correspondingly higher as the higher the concentration, the more CBN the wheel contains. The range for concentration is 25 to 125 but there is no standard -- Each manufacturer uses their own guidelines. All of our wheels shown here are 75 or 100 concentration. Be careful when shopping for 'low price' CBN wheels which may be 50 concentration or less -- This greatly reduces cutting action and wheel life in many applications!
